Happy holidays to you and your loved ones

OK, ladies. Let’s think new year…new you. That’s the plan.

With all the cold weather, the late-night holiday parties and the over indulgence of the season, your skin may need some extra attention. So, let’s ring in the new season by freshening up your makeup drawer and brightening your complexion.

Here’s what we suggest:

• Use a gentle facial scrub with micro beads once a week to remove extra dead skin cells, which make your complexion look dull and flakey. Follow up with a moisturizer with a SPF of 15, even though it’s winter.
• For tired eyes, take two cotton makeup-removal pads and soak them in iced tea. Lie down and place these over your eyes for 15 minutes. In a short time, you will feel refreshed, and any puffiness around the eyes will be reduced.
• To do a quick fix on chapped lips, take a toothbrush and lightly exfoliate them before bedtime. Then coat them with petroleum jelly to seal in moisture. When you head out the next day, make sure you have applied lip balm to protect your lips from the elements and reapply throughout the day. If you have the habit of licking your lips, it’s one to break, because chapped lips aren’t particularly kissable. You wouldn’t want that, now would you?

Are you thinking of your New Year’s resolutions yet? Is “Stop being late!” at the top of your list? If it is, we have some suggestions to help you get out the door on time. Here is the five-minutes-to-flawless makeup routine:

1. A yellow-based foundation is the best color for most women. Start with it. To cover dark under-eye circles, apply a concealer and then set it with powder.

2. Apply a neutral-colored eye shadow lightly on the eyelids. Add brown or soft black eyeliner, concentrating on the outer corners of the eyes. Use a brush and brown eyebrow powder to fill in the brows, and then blend it to soften the color.

3. Finally, use two coats of your favorite mascara. Apply a neutral rose blush to the cheeks, and sweep on a light shade of lip gloss. Bam! You are good to go.

Last, but not least, let’s put some order back into our chaotic lives by cleaning out our makeup drawer, throwing away the old stuff and replacing it with new fresh color. Some of those expiration dates might be a tad scary if you care to take a closer look.

Keep in mind that the life span of mascara is about three months. Foundations and lipsticks are good for a year, and eye shadows and powders last around two years. Old pencil eyeliner and lip liner should be thrown out if they are dried up, but if the consistency is still good, just resharpen them to a fresh point. Don’t forget to clean makeup brushes regularly to avoid spreading bacteria. There are some nasty ones out there, so be diligent.

The end result? A clean and tidy drawer ready to be filled with new makeup. If you don’t know where to start, email your questions to us or stop by our salon in the Chicago area and check out our new makeup line.

Hair loss can follow on the heels of stress

We live in a fast-paced society, and lots of people are stressed. This day-to-day tension can result in thinning hair…not exactly the area we were targeting!

photo of hair loss stressed hair cause
Normal hair loss:
We all lose about 100 hairs per day from the 100,000 or so that grow from the scalp. This is normal. The average growth cycle of a hair is only 4½ years. After it falls out, it is replaced in about six months. On average – after age 30 – everyone starts to lose more hair, although men tend to do so at a faster rate. This can be compounded by harsh daily treatment, illness or, as we mentioned, stress.

Stress-induced hair loss:
It’s true. Anxiety can cause accelerated hair loss in women. Excessive physical or emotional trauma is known to cause two types of hair loss:
1. The more common type is called “telogen effluvium,” excessive hair shedding thought to be caused by an acute stress event. The hair stops growing, becomes dormant, and falls out two to three months later. Eventually it grows back, usually within six to nine months.

2. The other type of hair loss, “alopecia areata,” is more severe. This involves a white blood cell attack on the hair follicles, and the hair falls out in patches. It may grow back on its own, but treatment often is required. Sometimes, however, the alopecia is permanent.

If you are experiencing a high level of anxiety, it is important to figure out a strategy to reduce this strain. Here are a few ideas to get you started on the road to a more peaceful and healthy life:

Daily stress-reduction tips:
1. Add something beautiful to your life daily, such as flowers or taking time to watch a sunset.

2. Schedule some “me time” or enjoyable activities with friends or family.

3. Eat, work and walk at a relaxed pace – unless you are walking for exercise, of course.

4. Take a break after meals to relax before putting your nose to the grindstone again.

5. If possible, go outside at least once a day. A little natural light and fresh air will do you good. Take a few moments to notice the simple things, such as the clouds, a toddler playing, or a pigeon scratching for crumbs.

6. During the day, do an occasional self-stress check. Are you clenching your jaw? Is there pain between your shoulders or tension in your neck? Breathe deeply, move around a little bit, and do some gentle stretches.

7. If you are worrying about something, try writing it down. Once it’s recorded on paper, you can access how to deal with these things or shelf the issues for awhile. Then, take a few minutes to breathe deeply and go on a mental vacation.

8. Wear comfortable clothing. Take off your shoes when it’s appropriate. (A little self-administered foot massage can ease tension and get those feel-good endorphins flowing in the brain.)

9. Access the noise level around you. Maybe you need a little quiet. Turn off the radio, TV, iPod and computer. If the noise level is not an issue, consider popping some soothing music in the CD player. Try yoga or spa music or even a sleep CD if you are not driving.

10. Avoid holding in negative feelings day after day. Write in a journal. Pray about it. Seek out a trusted friend or family member with whom you can share your heart. If necessary, schedule an appointment with a counselor or your family physician.

11. Schedule Scalp-Massage treatment with us to help you relax, improve hair-loss and encourage new growth. Massaging the scalp also helps loosen and remove dead cells and excess sebum on the scalp, which can hinder new hair growth. Scalp massage helps to distribute the hairs natural oils to protect and condition the hair.

We wish you the best of health, but if your hair is thinner than you would like, come in to discuss the issue with one of our hair professionals at Salon Trendz. Call us and we will schedule an appointment for a free hair analysis.

Fall trends: the long and short of it

It’s fall, and although it’s not as warm outside as it was a few short weeks ago, you still can be smokin’ hot! Here are a few hair and makeup tips that will help you sizzle.

The inverted bob:
Bobbing for apples or bobbin’ your hair…It’s all good fun for fall 2007. The inverted bob takes the classic bob to a whole different level. The hair is cut short in back, but kept long in front. It’s not as drastic as a pixie cut, but allows you to have the best of both worlds. The inverted bob is ideal for those with naturally straight hair, who wish to move away from that long-haired school-girl look and toward a more sophisticated appearance. Naturally, a bob is easier to maintain between trimmings than super long hair.

Longer locks:
When choosing to keep your length, there are many things to consider to ensure that your style is flattering. The shape of your face will be one of the biggest factors in how a long style looks on you. A round face will need a hairstyle to slim the features, while a long face is best suited to a hairstyle with bangs to shorten its appearance.

Your hair type also comes into play when choosing how to wear hair long. Is your hair curly or straight? Is it fine or thick? A full and sleek hairstyle will take a fair bit of styling effort if your hair is curly and fine. Ask yourself how much time you are willing to spend on grooming each day. If you are not particularly hair savvy or if you suffer a time crunch in the morning, an elaborate hairstyle might leave you frustrated and facing a lot of bad hair days. Instead, choose a simple style you can work with quickly each morning.

It’s also a great idea to look through magazines or online for style ideas. Once you have a picture you like, clip it out and take it with you on your next salon visit. Having an example of the long hairstyle you want will ensure that you and your stylist are on the same page. When consulting with your stylist, ask her for her expert advice. Ask her what exactly will be required to recreate the look at home. Hair products can make all the difference, as can having the proper tools. If you have curly hair, you will need a diffuser for your hairdryer and the proper hair gels, mousses and sprays. Get guidance on what type of brushes are needed to recreate the look in your own bathroom. Watch your stylist work with your hair. Ask questions and take mental notes.

Makeup and skin care tips
No one has a perfectly even complexion, but with the right makeup you can give the illusion that you have it. Start with a smooth application of matte foundation over your face. Then hide any imperfections with a creamy concealer, and set your foundation with loose powder. To add color to your face, sweep a natural shade of blush across your cheekbones. For more impact, choose a bolder shade, but be sure to apply it lightly and to blend it well.

Your eyes are key players on your face, so do them right. Sophistication can be simple with a sweep of eyeshadow, eyeliner and mascara. For a neutral look, pick a shadow shade that’s close to your skin tone. For extra eye emphasis, use multiple shades and get creative. To define eyes, apply deeper shades from the lash line to the crease of your eye. A sweep of a lighter shade from the inner corner of your lid to your browbone adds a nice highlight. Follow with a black or dark brown eyeliner. Then apply two coats of mascara for full, long lashes.

For your mouth, choose a neutral lip color or highlight your lips with a more intense shade. Use matte or a creamy lipstick, applying it with a lip brush for an even thin layer. A final dab of clear gloss in the center of your upper and lower lips creates a beautiful finish.

How to control frizz in curly hair?

Straight hair is very popular right now, but there is no doubt that there are just as many fans of tousled curls too. Just a few years ago, women and teens flocked to the beauty salons to get actress Kerri Russell’s coveted tendrils. They weren’t too happy when she cut them all off though, and WB television execs saw the ratings of teen drama “Felicity” nosedive by 30 percent after she went “poodle.”

What wisdom can we derive from this? Think good and hard before you snip. For those with natural curl or the salon-enhanced kind, here are a few tips on how to get that hair to behave.

Control the frizz in your curly hair by…
• Getting a great haircut from a pro. Start with an expert trim from someone who knows curly hair and can give you the structure you need. Medium length is a safe bet. You don’t want to go too short, as the extra length helps weigh down the curls a bit and reduce some of the frizz. You might want to avoid blunt cuts, so that you don’t end up with a poufy do. Also pass on razor cuts…as they aggravate the cuticle of the hair and invite split ends.

• Using the appropriate hair products. A moisturizing shampoo and conditioner are a good start. Follow up with a smoothing serum. Products that contain silicon can be very helpful in taming the “wild beast,” but avoid products that contain alcohol, which is drying.

• Limiting how often you wash your hair. Curly locks tend to be on the dry side, and obsessive washing will strip the hair of essential oils. When you do wash your hair, be careful not to rub it dry with a towel. This only makes the hair cuticles stand up instead of lay down flat, inviting frizzies to have a party. Blot or air dry. No rubbing!

• Knowing what tools to use. If you have the time, air dry. If not, use a blow-dryer with at least 1800 watts and a diffuser. When styling, grab small sections of damp hair, twist it and dry it with a diffuser, which reduces the force of the air coming out of the dryer and circulates it gently around the hair. If you let the hair blow around too much, you will only compound the frizziness.

• Having Japanese thermal re-conditioning. This radically reduces the frizzies. In fact, you’ll have to kiss the curls goodbye as this is a long-term, hair-straightening procedure. Consult with a trained professional to see if this is a service that is right for you and your hair. Give it some extra thought and then make an informed decision.

These are just a few of the things you can do to tame frizz. For more advice, schedule a free hair-analysis appointment by calling our salon in Palos Heights, Ill., just outside downtown Chicago.

Blowout: practice makes perfect

Swingy, glossy, straight hair is ever popular, and a few key blow-drying tricks will help you master the moves at home. Whether you do it yourself or opt for help from a salon, the results should last for several days if it’s done right.

Here are a few hints:
Step 1: Wash and condition your hair with products designed for your hair type.
The first line of defense to the hair shaft is a good conditioner, said stylist David Evangelista on an edition of CBS’s “The Early Show.” Then towel dry it with a good absorbent towel. “Do not rub it! If you rub, you could damage the cuticle,” explained Evangelista, “and for the perfect blowout, you really want the cuticle to be smooth and unruffled. If you rub, you're going to get frizzy and there goes the look. Just blot."

Work a leave-in conditioner through your hair from the tips up to the roots. Distribute it evenly over every strand. If your hair is fine, use a leave-in spray. If your hair tends to curl, use a richer cream. .Hold off on shine serums until the end of the blowout session, since they tend to evaporate with heat.

Step 2: Detangle sections of hair with a wide-tooth comb. Then divide it into four segments with a pointed tail comb. Make one big section on each side of the head and two in the back. Twist up all but one part and secure with sturdy clips. If your hair is über-thick, divide each bigger segment into three mini sections. Everything but the part you work on should be pinned out of the way. (Start with one of the front segments.)

Make sure you use a brush designed for your hair type. For course or curly hair, a boar bristle brush is a good choice. For finer hair, select a metal brush which will help manipulate style and lift into the hair as you blow-dry.

Step 3: Hold the dryer an inch from the roots of your hair. Slide your fingers close to the scalp and pull the section out a few inches, making sure the tension is evenly distributed throughout the strands. Once the roots are dry, hold the dryer above the hair and roll a round brush forward, down through the section. Repeat if necessary until you get a nice finish. Then, progress slowly through the other sections of the hair. Patience is key to a good outcome.

Step 4: When you finish drying, go back in with more products that give shine and protect the hair from humidity. Finishing oils are good for dry hair with flyaways, but a lighter shine cream is better for fine hair.

Now that you have the know-how, why don’t you give it a try. “Practice makes perfect,” the saying goes, but if you find yourself needing extra help, we are available. Located in Palos Heights, Ill., about 18 miles southwest of downtown Chicago, we would be happy to answer your questions or set up a hair-styling appointment, so email us or give us a ring.

Knowing a few tricks of the trade will keep your hair looking younger

If Father Time is knocking on the door, there are ways to get him to go away. Implementing different beauty strategies will help give you and your hair a more youthful appearance. Here are some answers to the oft-asked questions from women who want to look younger.

My hair color is washing me out. What should I do?
Your hair color may be too ashy, which means it has a cool tone to it. Usually those with fair skin and green or blue eyes fall into this “cool” category. If you have olive, brown or golden tones to your skin, you probably fall into the “warm” family, which means you should have a warm color to your hair. Add some golden hues such as caramel or bronze to your hair and that should escort you back into the warm tones that are most flattering to your skin. If you just don’t know which camp you fall in, it is best to check with a hair care professional.

Will going blonder make me look younger?
That depends. You may not necessarily need to go lighter, but you may need to soften the color. Sometime adding a few highlights or lowlights is the boost you need to shave off a few years.

Why don’t my highlights blend away my grays?
If the old tricks aren’t working anymore, consider adding a single process color to your base before you highlight. This will take care of the gray and then give you the contrast that you desire.

My natural dark hair looks dull. What can I do to bring back the shine?
We would recommend that you change your shampoo to a gentler one such as L’Oreal’s Vitamino line. Use the line’s conditioner, too. That might adjust the problem, but if that doesn’t give you the results you want, ask your colorist to add a “deposit-only” glaze to match your natural color. This will give you the shine you are looking for, and it won’t leave a color line along the hair shaft when your tresses grow out.

How often should I wash my hair?
Long, thick and curly hair should be washed only two or three times a week at the most. By leaving your hair unwashed for a day or two, your scalp’s natural oils can work their way up the hair shafts and condition them in the process. When you do wash your hair, it is very important to use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. We recommend L’Oreal’s Absolute Repair Shampoo and Conditioner.

Healthy Hair Summer Beauty Tips

1. What’s a chic way to keep the hair off my face and neck this summer?

Try twisting your hair into a simple bun or knot. Add a little accent pin and “Bam!” You’re good to go. Creative braids and the classic ponytail are great options, too.

2. What is a quick way to make my eyes “pop”?

It’s summer, so you can be a little playful. Try a simple stroke of bright eyeliner, and that should do the trick.

3. What’s the fashionable accessory of Summer 2008?

This season demands something bright and sassy. Try a colorful wrap around your hair, some cute headgear, or a creative accessory that has “You” written all over it.

4. It’s swimming season. How can I prevent my hair from drying out?

Summer time is pool time, so that means a lot of exposure to sun, chlorine and other chemicals. Before you head for the pool, protect your hair with a layer of leave-in conditioner and add a hat. Then just enjoy your time in the water! When you get home, be sure to rinse out the chlorine and pamper your hair with another conditioning treatment.

5. How should I protect the new highlights in my hair?

Try using shine serum or leave-in conditioner to protect your highlights from the hot summer sun.

6. I’d like a consultation. Where is your salon?
Salon Trendz is a “women only” salon in Palos Heights, Ill., a suburb 18 miles southwest of downtown Chicago. We merge “city looks with suburban sensibility” to give you the style boost that is just right for you. Salon Trendz’ Hair Beauty Tips

Questions. You ask them, and we are more than happy to provide some answers for your beauty inquiries. Anything for our sisters; we are in this together!
How do I cut down my styling time when getting ready in the morning?
A quick way to cut time in half is simply to wash your hair the night before. When you get up, your hair is dry and you can begin styling it immediately.

My hair gets oily by the end of each day. What can I do?
Oily hair often has a partner in crime: dandruff. Therefore, we recommend a clarifying shampoo for this type of hair. Shampooing twice may also work well for you. Using conditioner is fine, but do not apply the conditioner on the scalp. Be extra diligent about rinsing thoroughly.

With spring, summer and humidity around the corner, how can I permanently control my frizzy, curly hair?
To permanently get rid of unruly hair, Japanese straightening may be the answer for you. With Japanese thermal re-conditioning, you permanently smooth out the hair shafts, and not even humidity can sneak its way in. For more information, check out our Japanese Hair Straightening service.

How can I prevent breakage along my hairline?
If you have breakage along the hairline, you are probably stressing your hair. Get serious about deep conditioning, and make sure you are getting proper nutrition. A lack of certain vitamins and minerals in the diet can have an adverse effect on your hair. Remember not to tie your hair in a tight ponytail either. If the problem persists, it’s always a good idea to pay a visit to your physician.
How can I get that sun-kissed appearance in my hair?
One of the best ways to get natural-looking highlights is to make a balayage appointment. This hand-painted coloring technique gives subtle highlights one to two shades lighter than your natural color. This gives the impression that you have spending a lot of time outside in the sun.

How often should I wash my hair?
Thick and curly hair should be washed only two or three times a week. This will let natural oils from the scalp condition your hair. It is important for those with coarser hair to use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. We recommend the L’Oreal Absolute Repair line. Those without dryness can wash their hair more often.

My hair color is washing me out. What should I do?
Your hair color may be too ashy. Warming your shade may help flatter your skin tone. See a color specialist if you don’t know what hair color goes best with your skin tone.

Will going blonder make me look younger?
Not necessarily. Sometimes adding a few softer highlights -- rather than doing a drastic color change -- will shave a few years off your look.

My natural dark hair looks dull. What can I do to bring back the shine?
One trick is to have your hairdresser apply a deposit-only glaze that matches your color. This will add shine. You also may want to switch to a gentler shampoo such as L'Oreal’s Vitamino Shampoo.
How do I make my hair look fuller?
Blow-dry your hair until it is half dry. Then, flip the head upside down and mist L’Oreal’s Volume Spray close to the scalp and continue to style. Adding highlights is another way to give the impression of extra texture and fullness.

How do I keep up with the latest beauty fashion trends?
You have many choices like researching online, buying beauty magazines, reading articles in the newspaper and watching style shows on TV. You also may check out Salon Trendz’ blog routinely for the latest hair-styling techniques and beauty tips.
